Getting Down To Basics with Computers

A Quick Guide to Data Storage.

Every the organization generates a lot of records that are kept available for a considerable amount of time regardless of its size. Currently the amount of generated information is saved as electronic data. Storage of data is now being carried out using several ways. In making a decision on the best type of data storage to rely on, there are several factors that should be considered. Availability, content and security, the format of the data and the amount of data are among the factors that should go into consideration. Some forms of generated data usually require additional security due to their sensitive nature. Storage facilities that have normal security features are the ones that are used for storage of data that is not sensitive.

Among the available data storage options are such as networked data storage, offsite data storage, on site disc storage, virtual backups and much more. Each of the available options has its merits and demerits. The simplest form of saving data is by saving the information on the desktop computer or in the server where it is primarily stored. Since data is usually on the computer already, this form of storage is cheap. The security of the machine is the one that determines the security of such information. A relative level of security is provided, if the PC or the server is in a locked room which is restricted to the people who can access it. Such form of arrangement has a problem of that it has a single point of failure. All the data will be lost or become inaccessible if the computer fails. Home users would not find this a big problem as would a business enterprise. Regular back up of data on to removable media where the storage is on site is another common data saving strategy. This the method is implemented through the use of a removable disk or a tape in which the information is stored and then the device secured in a near location. Unlike the first storage method which has a single point failure problem, this method ensures information is well backed up and can easily be accessed. buying the media drive for storage comes at an extra cost therefore making this method more costly. The security of the backup media depends on the security of the drawer or the location where the information is stored.

Offsite physical storage is one of the data saving options that offers more security. The method has been used for a long period especially in paper based documents and other types of records and can equally efficient in the storage of data media. The method of storage involves placing removable information carrying media in a secure offsite location.Lessons Learned About Data
